It's popularity seemed to spread world wide via Russian Sailors while in Japanese ports teaching it to the street children during the 17th century Edo period. The Japanese children called it "Jan Ken Pon" and developed several street games utilizing the procedure to eliminate players and or determine a winner. This spread throughout the world and became also well known as "RoShambo" in many countries.
